Brief papers of Henry Merrell, an early settler at Fort Winnebago, Wis. who later lived at Portage and La Crosse. Included is a memoir in which Merrell describes his journey from New York State to Fort Winnebago via Green Bay in 1834. He became postmaster and sutler at the fort. He also describes other prominent settlers, especially his friend Daniel Whitney and trader Pierre Paquette; the landscape surrounding Lake Winnebago and the Wisconsin and Fox rivers; transportation on the Fox before improvements were made; Winnebago and Brotherton Indians; and Prairie du Chien and the Mississippi River. Also included are letterpress copies of several letters, 1846-1859, accompanied by typed transcriptions.
